The file cabinet below contains layers that you can add to your maps to provide information about the geography, ecology, and environment of the Kansas River Watershed. Files in KML and KMZ format can be loaded into your Google Earth. These files contain "layers" which can be added to Google Earth by first downloading them to your computer and saving them in your files; then you open Google Earth, and using File>Open>Browse you can import them. You will find lines, boundaries, and GPS photographs in the files that we provide below. Files containing simple lines (like the map of the main Kansas River channel) or icons (like the photo maps) can also be uploaded into Google Maps. You can go to a Google Map tutorial by clicking here. Unfortunately complex layers (like county maps or watershed boundaries) cannot be loaded into Google Maps at this time and must be viewed in Google Earth. We have added these to our website using a Google Earth embed gadget that requires a Google Earth plug-in to view. You can go to a Google Earth tutorial by clicking here and you can get a free Google Earth download for Mac or PC by clicking here The KML and KMZ files below were either created in Google Earth (for example, the photo layer from the River Inventory and the river outline) or were converted from SHP files that were available in publicly available GIS databases. We converted SHP files to KML and KMZ files using Google Earth Pro, which can be obtained through Google Earth for Educators |
